Taylor Schmidt honoured with Compassionate Kid’s Award
The Rotary Club of Cambridge Sunrise has selected Taylor Schmidt to receive its 2011 Compassionate Kid’s Award.
Schmidt, 14, is a student at St. Joseph Catholic School. She was selected from among elementary school students in Cambridge & North Dumfries attending public, separate, private, ethnic or home schools.
The award recognizes the outstanding contributions and achievements of a young person in our community, and will be presented at the school’s final assembly on June 27th, at 10:30 a.m. The award includes a plaque and $500 for Taylor’s charity of choice.
School principal Frank Clifford says, “in addition to achieving high academic results, Taylor is sensitive and helpful to all, especially those in need. She is a student that be counted on to do her best.”
In addition to participating in sports and many school activities, Schmidt raised $17,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society by cutting two thick 10-inch braids of her hair for wigs to honour her late grandfather, and together with a volunteer group raised a further $180,000 for ALS. Schmidt has been volunteering in the community since the age of eight.
